The key point to note is that the sulphur limit remains unchanged.
Under the temporary alternative specifications, petrol, diesel, and diesel blends must still meet New Zealand’s existing sulphur limit of 10 ppm, regardless of the fuel source or specification pathway used.
The guidance note also makes clear that:
- the amendments are intended to temporarily broaden fuel supply options in a constrained environment
- fuel may comply with either the existing New Zealand specifications or the temporary alternative Australian-based specifications
- fuel suppliers remain responsible for ensuring fuel is fit for common purpose and suitable for normal everyday use in New Zealand conditions.
